1. 1.What is the Spelman College Glee Club?

    The Spelman College Glee Cub is the campus choir and the ambassador for Spelman College.


  1. 2.When was the glee club founded?

    The Spelman College Glee Club was founded in 1925.


  1. 3.Do I have to be a music major or a music minor to become a member of the Spelman College Glee Club?

    No. All Spelman College students are welcomed to audition for the Spelman College Glee Club.


4. Do you have to audition to be in the Spelman College Glee Club?

    Yes. Everyone must audition to be a member of the Spelman College Glee Club. Auditions are held during New Student Orientation Week. Students may sign up for an audition date and time at the glee club table set up in the Manley Student Center. The audition process is three-fold: First, the prospective member will be required to sing one (1) song of her choice; Next, the prospective member will be vocalized for placement in the proper section; Lastly, the prospective member will be asked to sight-sing sheet music. You are only required to audition once for the rest of your tenure at Spelman College. Please fill out the required audition form prior to your audition.


  1. 5.I’m not a first-year student. Can I still audition for the glee club?

    Yes. Upperclassmen may audition either during New Student Orientation Week or during the first week of classes. Please see the glee club director to sign up for an audition date and time.


  1. 6.Are only music majors allowed to be in the Spelman College Glee Club?

     No. Anyone who currently attends Spelman College can be a member of the Spelman College Glee Club, regardless of her major.


  1. 7.Can you participate in the Spelman College Glee Club while majoring in the sciences?

    Yes. We have had a number of women who have sung in the Spelman College Glee Club while majoring in the sciences.


8. Does the Spelman College Glee Club require a lot of time?

    The glee club requires much dedication from all its members. Rehearsals may sometimes exceed the usual allotted time. Extra rehearsals may be called when there are additional performances. Although being a member of the glee club can be time consuming, glee club members are usually involved in other organizations.


9. Is the glee club considered a class? How do I get graded?

    Yes. Glee club can be taken as a one-credit class per semester. Members are graded by punctuality, attendance and participation in rehearsals and performances.


10. Do I have to be able to read music to be in the glee club?

    No. Members of the glee club develop the skill of reading music during their tenure in the organization.


11. How often does the Spelman College Glee Club rehearse?

    The glee club rehearses on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm. Additional rehearsals may be called when performances are near.


12. Does the glee club offer scholarship opportunities?

    Once the student has applied to Spelman College, there are several scholarship opportunities. In addition, the glee club offers scholarship opportunities.


13. Does it cost to be in the glee club?

    There are annual dues that must be paid in order to participate in certain events and performances.


14. Are there quizzes and tests in the glee club?

    There will sometimes be a quiz on the history of the Spelman College Glee Club that all members will be required to pass.


15. Do I have to buy a glee club wardrobe?

    Formal attire, pearl necklace, pearl earrings, red lipstick, garment bag, and other garments will be provided free of charge by the Spelman College Glee Club. However, if any items are misplaced or lost, the member will have to pay for the replacement.


16. Does the Spelman College Glee Club ever perform with the Morehouse College Glee Club?

    Yes. There are two (2) annual events that the Glee Clubs perform: The Annual Christmas Carol Concert and the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.


17. What type of music does the glee club sing?

    The glee club sings classical repertoire, spirituals, and occasionally gospel music.


18. Does the glee club travel? If so, what are the costs?

    Yes. The glee club takes an annual spring tour to different parts of the country. On occasion, the Glee Club travels internationally. All travel expenses are covered by the Spelman College Glee Club.
